MHSA regulation 2.9.2 appointment
A 2.9.2 appointment is a written appointment under regulation 2.9.2 of the Mine Health and Safety Regulations, which requires the mine manager to appoint the people needed to help enforce the regulations. On most mines, supervisors, foremen and contractors' supervisors hold a 2.9.2 appointment for their area of work, and mines ask contractors for these appointments in the safety file.
Each mine decides in its contractor standard who must hold a 2.9.2 appointment, who signs it, and which other appointments go with it (for example under regulations 2.6.1 or 8.5.5 for riggers). Start from the mine's own index and templates.
SafetyFileBuilder reads the mine's requirements, drafts the appointments for your people from their roles and competencies, files the signed copies, and flags anyone whose appointment or training is missing.

What the Mine Health and Safety Regulations say
“The manager shall— … appoint such persons as may be necessary to assist him in enforcing such observation of the regulations”
Who signs a contractor's 2.9.2 appointment differs between mines: some have the mine manager appoint contractors' supervisors, others require the contractor's own responsible person to appoint them under the mine's system. Follow the mine's contractor management standard.

Questions
Who needs a 2.9.2 appointment?
Whoever the mine requires, usually supervisors, foremen and contractors' supervisors who see that the regulations are observed in their area. The mine's contractor standard says which roles.
Is a 2.9.2 appointment the same as a 16.2 appointment?
No. A 16.2 appointment is made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act by a company's CEO. A 2.9.2 appointment is made under the Mine Health and Safety Regulations for work on a mine.
Does a 2.9.2 appointment move from one mine to another?
Usually not: it is for a specific mine, area and work. A new mine or project normally needs a new appointment on its own template.
